Thought I’d get in early on this sort of image. Simple Christmas decoration close with a Christmas tree delicately placed in the doorway of my house to give the OOF background (Bokeh for the arty types). It’s not easy to get the decoration in focus when your arm is just that little bit shorter than what’s comfortable for that focus range.

A spell of late night shooting at Enniscorthy dog track. It’s challenging to get a photograph of animals running at break-neck speed in the dark and making it recognisable.

As ever, I can’t just put a shot in and leave it alone…but here’s two with differing finishes. Just don’t ask me who won!

This was taken a wile ago near Kilmore Quay, Co Wexford on a foggy morning after extensive rain that flooded the land.

This was taken on the same morning as the following image and within 500 yards on the same lane.

I like fog!!

If the scaremongers were to be believed we’ll be getting this stuff next month…snow. This was an image from early 2010 when we got the first fall. Turned to B&W, applied a blue tone to the shadows, an orange tone to the highlights and balanced the saturation.

Old lens…old image

Using the Helios 2/58 lends itself to older images in yer head. This, just looked for a Polaroid treatment. Bleached the colours, added grain, pushed faded bits to nothing and added a Polaroid frame.

Stranded

The first image taken for a while…on Rosslare Strand. I used a Helios 2/58 with an adapter on my Sony A700. It was all manual control and it has an insane DOF which I discovered when I reviewed the images afterwards. Manual focusing isn’t nearly as accurate when you’re reliant on your own eye. Not that it made a difference on this one.

The technique was to convert to B&W, blur, add noise, blur again (important to subdue the noise) then add a vignette. The white frame to emphasise the dull, almost imagination-evoking lack of detail. I like this sort of image although I can fully understand anyone else viewpoint that it ruins a good image. It all depends what’s in your mind at the time…this is in my mind.
